How To Break In New Goalkeeper Gloves
Fresh out of the packet, most goalkeeper gloves feel stiffer than they will once they've had a bit of use. Here's how to break them in properly, without ruining the latex before they've even seen a match.
Dampen The Palms
Before you wear a new pair for the first time, lightly dampen the latex palms with water. Dry latex is stiffer and grips less well than latex that's slightly wet, and this helps it start to soften and mould to your hands.
Wear Them Around The House First
Put your new gloves on and flex your fingers, make catching motions, and get used to the fit before you take them onto the pitch. This gets the latex and the internal padding moving without any risk of damaging them in a live session.
Use Them In Training Before A Match
Don't save a brand new pair for matchday. Use them in a training session or two first, so the cut has softened slightly and you're confident in the fit before it counts.
Avoid Heat
Never use a hairdryer, radiator, or direct sunlight to speed up breaking in your gloves. Heat damages latex permanently and will shorten the life of the glove rather than soften it safely.
Keep Them Looked After
Once broken in, proper care keeps that fresh grip going for longer. See our full glove washing and care guide for the full routine.
